Free & Budget-Friendly Winter Things to Do in Akaroa
Visit the Historic Akaroa Museum
When the winter chill sets in, head indoors to the Akaroa Museum on Rue Lavaud. Admission is completely free! The museum offers a warm, fascinating look into the unique blend of Māori and French colonial history that shaped the Banks Peninsula. From May to September, the museum operates on winter hours (10:30 AM to 4:00 PM), making it the perfect midday escape from the cold.
Explore Akaroa’s Historic French Streets

Best Winter Walks & Hikes Around Banks Peninsula
Chasing Newton’s Waterfall
Summer visitors are often disappointed to find this waterfall reduced to a trickle. Winter, however, is the absolute best time to visit. Thanks to seasonal rainfall, the short 2.2 km walk behind the town rewards you with a powerful, rushing cascade.
Spot the Rhino at Children’s Bay Walkway
This coastal farm track is famous for its quirky, hidden outdoor sculptures including a giant metal rhinoceros overlooking the harbour. The panoramic views of the winter sea are spectacular.
Explore the Mystical Hinewai Reserve
Located just a short drive into the hills, this massive 1,250-hectare native forest is open 365 days a year. Winter brings a misty, ethereal vibe to the fern-fringed trails. The hills are much colder than the town centre. Pack plenty of layers and aim to hike mid-morning to maximize the daylight.
Find Peace in the Garden of Tane
If you want a shorter nature fix, this native forest reserve sits right on the edge of town. It features easy, sheltered walking tracks that protect you from the harbour winds, making it a peaceful spot for winter birdwatching.
Important considerations for walking in winter
- Layer Up: Harbour winds can be biting, so bring a windproof jacket.
- Wear Good Boots: Tracks get slippery in winter, so wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip.
- Chase the Sun: Daylight hours are short, so plan your outdoor hikes between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
- Check Trail Status: Pop into the local information centre if there has been heavy rain to ensure tracks are safe.
