Cruise Highlights
Experience the fascinating marine life of picturesque Lyttelton Harbour on a memorable two-hour wildlife cruise aboard our new catamaran.
Only 15 minutes from the centre of Christchurch is Lyttelton Harbour. Unwind in the sea air as you experience the extensive local marine life including the world's smallest and rarest marine dolphin - the Hector's or New Zealand Dolphin.
As we depart you will see the historic township of Lyttelton, which hosts a busy working port with a fascinating history. The 'first four ships' arrived here from Britain carrying the first colonial settlers in December 1850.
The highlight of the cruise is undoubtedly the locating the Hector's Dolphin. The experience of Black Cat’s skipper and crew mean we can quickly find the dolphins so you can spend time watching their entertaining antics. You'll also see a wide variety of coastal marine bird life.
Lyttelton Harbour is formed by the crater of an ancient extinct volcano and you’ll see the longest lava flow on the peninsula, volcanic rocks and massive erosion caused by storms over millions of years.
From more recent times you'll see shipwrecks in the shallows as well as a 19th century fort which contains a number of “disappearing guns” dating back to the late 1800s in response to the “Russian Scare”.
The cruise is fully narrated by your Captain and we're sure you'll be entertained and enlightened by his commentary.
We look forward to welcoming you aboard!
